Crowds of pro-army supporters gathered outside the Presidential Palace in Khartoum on Saturday to demand the dissolution of Abdalla Hamdok’s government and the formation of a ‘military government’ to run the country until the general elections.

According to media reports, the protest was called for by politicians affiliated with prominent military figures.

“We call on Al-Burhan to dissolute the government because it is a government of injustice, and we cannot expel injustice and bring about another one,” said Abdul Jalil Zain Al-Abdeen, a protester.

“The Empowerment Committee is an illegal and politicized committee. The evidence for that is that no Constitutional Court or Appeal Court have been formed during the past period, therefore, we are still waiting for an objective decision by the chief of Sovereignty Council to dissolute the government and hold accountable all those who have perpetrated criminal acts within the Empowerment Committee,” added Hassan Mohammed, another protester.

Since 2019, Sudan is run by a temporary council, a joint military-civil entity formed in the wake of months-long protests that led to the overthrow of former President Omar Al-Bashir.

Tensions have escalated among military and civil representatives of the Council after a failed coup on September 21.
