A large number of army supporters staged a sit-in in Khartoum Thursday near Al-Shuhada Park to demand the dissolution of the interim government.

Footage shows people raising flags and banners with slogans supporting the army and others critical of the government, including those reading ‘The army is the safety valve and the faithful guard of Sudan’ and ‘No to dismissal and displacement of workers, yes to dissolving the Empowerment Committee.’

“Sudan is for Sudanese, not for those who hold two nationalities, as it is not the homeland of those who hold two nationalities. We protect Sudan with our eyes, and we demand that President of the Sovereign Council (Abdel-Fattah) Al-Burhan dissolve the current government, because it is a government of injustice. We expelled injustice and it cannot be replaced with another injustice,” said one of the protesters.

Another one added, “The Empowerment Committee, in light of the previous period, is not considered legal and is politicised, and the evidence for this is that it did not form the Constitutional Court or the Court of Appeal during the last period. Therefore, we are awaiting tonight a decision from the President of the Sovereignty Council to dissolve the government, and hold all those who committed crimes accountable in the Empowerment Committee.”

Sudan has been hit by various demonstrations and sit-ins, some in favour of the army and others in favor of the civilian rule of the country.

A combination of military and civilian leaders have led the country since the overthrow of former President Omar al-Bashir in 2019

Thursday’s protest marked the anniversary of the October 1964 uprising that ended the dictatorship of Ibrahim Aboud.
