Thousands of members of some of the largest trade unions in Belgium marched against rises in energy prices and income indexation in Brussels on Monday.
Miguel, a member of The General Labour Federation of Belgium (FGTB) union, explained the main reasons for the protest.
“Firstly, for trade union freedoms, because 17 of our trade union comrades have been sentenced for an action they carried out some time ago. Secondly, the FEB is threatening to freeze wage indexation, so we are demonstrating to maintain it. And thirdly, the rise in energy prices,” said Miguel.
Police reported that 3,000 people participated in the protest, while the organisers claimed that 6,000 people participated.
SOUNDBITES:
SOT, Gaëlle, CSC union member (French): “This law 96 which locks up the negotiation. There are huge profits that have been made during the crisis by some big companies, and the workers who have been starving during the crisis, and the women workers in particular, cannot benefit from this at all because we are limited to 0.4 percent of salary increases. This is really peanuts and it is really indecent.”
SOT, Miguel, FGTB union member (French): “We are demonstrating today for three things. Firstly, for trade union freedoms, because 17 of our trade union comrades have been sentenced for an action they carried out some time ago. Secondly, the FEB is threatening to freeze wage indexation, so we are demonstrating to maintain it. And thirdly, the rise in energy prices, today we are here to demand structural measures so that the Belgian population is not affected by the rise in these prices.”
SOT, Fireman from Brussels (French): “The demonstration today is planned in relation to a national common front strike on purchasing power.”
SOT, Fireman from Brussels (French): “It is an inter-professional demonstration. The most expensive part of life, the increase of gas, fuel, people can not make ends meet in majority, that is why the firemen are concerned and all the public service.”
