Bolivia: Hundreds of workers protest in La Paz against Law 1386

Hundreds of Bolivian workers marched through the streets of La Paz on Monday to protest against the so-called Law 1386, demanding that it be repealed.

Protesters can be heard chanting slogans as they march with Bolivian flags and banners against the law, with messages such as ‘no to Law 1386’ and ‘damned and lying laws.’

“We ask them to repeal Law 1386. Why? Comrades, because the unions do not live off the government, 65% of the economy in Bolivia belongs to the unions, we manage the economy. What has this government done for 14 years? It has not created jobs, that is why we are in the streets,” said demonstrator Monica Usquiano.

In August, the Bolivian Congress passed the National Strategy Law against the Legitimisation of Illicit Gains and the Financing of Terrorism, known as Law 1386. The law has caused controversy among trade unions and groups opposed to the government, that claim that some articles of the document allow for discretionary changes and interpretations by Luis Arce’s government.
