Bolivians staged a protest outside the US embassy in La Paz demanding an end to the US embargo on Cuba and denouncing the US ‘interference’
in the island nation.
Humberto Claros of the Unified Syndical Confederation of Rural Workers of Bolivia said: “With this preamble, comrades, we are going to read a small manifesto against the shameless interference of the United States, which after blockading the Cuban people economically and commercially, now comes to say that there are humanitarian problems, comrades.”
The embargo, first imposed in 1962, prevents American businesses from trading with Cuba. It has been criticised by many for restricting public access to food, safe drinking water, medicine and other needs.
In recent days, thousands of Cubans hit the streets in rare anti-government protests, decrying the country’s worsening economic crisis, crackdown on civil liberties and the government’s handling of the pandemic as Cuba sees a record surge in COVID cases.
Cuban President Diaz-Canel accused the US of ‘orchestrating’ the unrest via social media campaigns and of sending ‘mercenaries’ to the country.
White House Press Secretary Psaki said the US stands with the Cubans in ‘their call for freedom’.
“I think what is most important to the Cuban people is understanding that the United States stands with them and their call for freedom, from both the pandemic and from the decades of repression and economic suffering to which they have been subjected by Cuba’s authoritarian regime,” said Psaki.
