Brazil: Hundreds demand justice for Moise Kabagambe in Rio de Janeiro

Hundreds of protesters gathered in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday to demand justice for Moise Kabagambe, a Congolese immigrant who reportedly was beaten to death in Rio de Janeiro after asking for unpaid wages.

“We want justice. The kid died working; he was an honest worker. All people here on those kiosks knew Moise, we all want justice,” said Germe Vulga Massuagui, one of the protesters.

According to Kabagambe’s family, he was killed on January 24 after demanding to get paid for two days he had worked at a kiosk.

A security camera video was released showing Kabagambe being attacked by a group of men who repeatedly beat him with a baseball bat.

According to police reports, three men have been arrested suspected of being involved in the killing.

Similar protests took place in Brazil, including Sao Paulo, Salvador, and the country’s capital Brasilia on Saturday.

I come here for Moise’s life, and also for Durval who was killed this week. Black lives matter and we have to change this concept of racism in Rio de Janeiro.”

SOT, Edson Santos, Protester (Portuguese): “We…all black people are sensitive to the antiracist fight, we are here in the beach in Barra da Tijuca against the coward assassination in this crime against young Moise. This protest is to press authorities to find the responsibles.”
