Thousands showed their support for Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro in Sao Paulo at a rally on the country’s independence day on Tuesday.
Protesters wrapped Bazilian national flags took to Paulista Avenida to hear the president speak.
“We are here in Sao Paulo to protest against what has been done against our federal government, against Bolsonaro, there are supreme court ministers doing stuff against our country, against our justice system. So we are here because we love Brazil, we love freedom and we are Christians, we want that everyone has the right to freedom and that’s why we are defending our land,” said government supporter Juliano at the rally.
The Brazilian president is currently under criticism for the mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic, the political enabling of environmental destruction, corruption, and attacks on the judiciary and the supreme court.
In the latest polls for next year’s presidential election, Bolsonaro has lost support against former left-wing President Lula Inacio Lula da Silva.
