Indigenous protesters rallied in Brasilia on Wednesday ahead of a landmark ruling by Brazil’s Supreme Court on land rights.
The protest, attended by thousands of Indigenous protesters, is thought to be one of the largest of its kind in recent years, with a candle light vigil held on Tuesday.
“We are here to defend the lives of those who are yet to come. The life of our youth, our children, and our grandchildren,” explained Pui Tembe, a Tembe tribe member.
“Our main objective today is to ensure that the Supreme Court can look with care and give a fair trial to indigenous peoples. That’s what we’re looking for”, added Tembe.
Indigenous groups lost significant portions of their lands in the past century as they were forced to move, often violently and without compensation or consent, to make way for the expansion of farming, mining, and lumber interests.
The court is considering a case relating to the Xokleng people, who were forced from most of their ancestral lands over, which are located in southern Brazil’s Santa Catarina state, from the 19th century onwards.
The proceedings came about after the state government evicted some Xokleng community members living on a nature reserve on their former tribal lands on the basis that they were not occupying the land at the time of the ratification of the Brazilian constitution in 1988.
A ruling in favour of the Xokleng would reopen hundred of existing land claims for the many Indigenous groups who forced off their lands prior to 1988.
