Protesters toppled a statue of Sir John A. Macdonald, the country’s first prime minister, considered the architect of the Canadian residential school system that led to the deaths of indigenous children, in Hamilton on Saturday.

The local city council decided in July to not take down the statue. Protesters today rallied against that decision before tying ropes around the statue and taking it down, hammering and spraying it with red paint. Jordan Carrier, one of the protesters involved, said it was better to “no longer glorify somebody who enacted so much harm and colonial violence against indigenous peoples.”

No arrests have reportedly been made, however the local police investigates the incident.
