Chilean protesters and members of various activist groups marched in memory of the civilians detained, disappeared and murdered during the military government of former President Augusto Pinochet, in Santiago on Saturday.

Police deployed tear gas and water cannons to push back protesters on the streets of the Chilean capital after tense clashes broke out.

Augusto Pinochet’s era left a death toll of around 3,000 murdered, some 1,200 missing and 33,000 tortured, according to the official figures, though human rights organisations believe the toll is much higher.

Pinochet imposed a military junta after ousting socialist president Salvador Allende, who later committed suicide. Pinochet stayed in power until 1990 after a referendum voted for a transition back to democracy.

SOT, Protester, Marcela Abedrapo (Spanish:) “We are many, we are thousands, perhaps millions of us who are very clear that we have to change this country with the legacy that Salvador Allende left us, because it is not true that the country was in crisis, which is true is that in the booming economy the people were participating and the international oligarchy with Nixon at the head could not bear that. That fascist right wing destroyed the dreams of thousands and millions of people with blood and fire.”
