Chile: Death of Pinochet's widow brings joyful crowds to Santiago streets for celebration

Santiago de Chile was seen filled with joy and celebration as Lucia Hiriart, the widow of late General Augusto Pinochet died at the age of 99, Thursday.
Hiriart outlived Pinochet who died in 2006.
As Chileans head to vote in the presidential runoff, they will have to choose between progressive Gabriel Boric and right-wing candidate Jose Antonio Kast, who was reported to have defended Pinochet’s legacy.
Augusto Pinochet’s era left a death toll of around 3,000 murdered, some 1,200 missing and 33,000 tortured, according to the official figures, though human rights organisations believe the toll is much higher.
Pinochet imposed a military junta after ousting socialist president Salvador Allende, who later committed suicide. Pinochet stayed in power until 1990 after a referendum voted for a transition back to democracy.

SOT, Jennifer Frias, Resident (Spanish): “As a Chilean I feel happy because it is something that we have all been waiting for a long time, I think it happens at a very important moment for us that we are facing a terribly important vote that is basically good against evil, I regret that in this country there is not much justice and that that old woman has left without paying but symbolically fills me with joy .”
