A protest took place in Santiago on Friday, in support of the people that had been detained during the 2019 demonstrations that have triggered the redrafting of the country’s Constitution.

Protesters clashed with police in the streets of the Chilean capital, with police forces using water cannons and tear gas to disperse them.

“There are 174 companions that are still in prison. There has been an excessive abuse of the prison preventive, what does that mean? That the processes and investigations have been stopped, only our colleagues are being previously punished, without trial, without evidence,” said a protester.

Activists demand the release of those detained during the protests that started in 2019 and denounce impunity in cases of police abuse.

SOT, Protester (Spanish): “In Chile, since the period of the outbreak or popular revolt as we call it, at this time, more or less according to statistics, there are 174 companions that are still in prison. There has been an excessive abuse of the prison preventive [measures], what does that mean? That the processes and investigations have been stopped, only our colleagues are being previously punished, without trial, without evidence.”
