Chile: Women’s rights activists stage rally in Santiago against gender-based violence

Protesters marched through the streets of Santiago on Thursday for an International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women rally.

Activists carried an effigy of the far-right presidential candidate Jose Antonio Kast, which they doused with gasoline and set fire to during the march.

Thousands of people participated in the demonstration, called for by different feminist groups through social networks, and it took place in a peaceful manner.

Adriana Gomez, one protester, stated that there is “a certain and real threat of a severe cut of rights for women and sexual dissidents, and other sectors. In that sense I think that there is an ethical and moral duty to be here, women and everyone, because the danger is real.”

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women seeks to raise awareness of all forms of aggression perpetrated against women and girls.
