China: Festive activities held inside Olympic media centre as New Year celebrations end

Lantern festival celebrations were held inside the Main Media Centre of the Beijing Winter Olympics on Tuesday to mark the final day of the Chinese New Year festive period.

The centre was decorated with lanterns and ornaments of different colours, while volunteers were seen doing handicrafts and playing games.

The atmosphere inside the centre’s canteen was also full of festivity, with a special traditional Chinese menu for the occasion.

The lantern festival is celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first month of the Chinese calendar, marking the last day of the New Year celebrations.

SOT, Volunteer (Mandarin): “Today we have planned some Olympic-themed activities at the Main Media Centre. Because the Olympics [logo] has five rings, we have planned five different activities.”
