Germany’s team chief Dirk Schimmelpfennig has said that the quarantine conditions have improved though he raised concerns about the situation following talks with Olympic officials in Beijing on Sunday.
The conditions have been a target of criticism in recent days with athletes claiming they were not receiving adequate food or training equipment in quarantine.
Athletes who test positive for COVID-19 but do not have symptoms have to go to an isolated quarantine hotel, those with symptoms are admitted to hospital. Neither those with symptoms or without will be allowed to compete in the games unless they are cleared by a doctor.
SOUNDBITES:
SOT, Dirk Schimmelpfennig, Germany’s team chief (German): “Yes, very pleased. Since yesterday, we have clearly managed to improve the conditions. The cooperation between the D-team, the German Olympic Sports Confederation (‘Deutscher Olympischer Sportbund’, DOSB), the German Ski Association has been a success. Also in the cooperation between the IOC and BOCOG. We would like to thank all of them for the quick turnaround. And that our athletes have at the very least satisfactory positions and general conditions in a difficult quarantine situation.”
SOT, Dirk Schimmelpfennig, Germany’s team chief (German): “The athletes have been given bigger rooms, working Wi-Fi connections and an exercise bike in Noland’s [Seegert] room. That will also be taken care of by the Norwegian team. So at least we will have fairer conditions here for all three athletes who have a very difficult position.”
SOT, Dirk Schimmelpfennig, Germany’s team chief (German): “We have worked together very professionally with the German Ski Association. We have tried to have constructive contact with the IOC and BOCOG, and there we have found an improved, quick and constructive solution in very difficult situation, including in this pandemic situation.”
SOT, Dirk Schimmelpfennig, Germany’s team chief (German): “We are very pleased, that it helps the team already from the first day, the first medal fell. We already had in Pyeongchang with two medals, which were won directly on the first day. Also the other participants of the team are in a good mood, they have brought good performances. We got fifth place in the biathlon. And in the mixed relay, the long runners of three athletes were first with 21, four and then 25. Today, Annika Morgan took eighth place in the final, in the snowboard slopestyle. Rodler is now in a good position after two races, and in the 3,000m speed skating, Claudia Pechstein made a good hit.”
