Olympic cyclist Simon Geschke has tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of the Olympics in Tokyo, and will not be permitted to take part in Saturday’s race at Mount Fuji.

The result was confirmed by a subsequent PCR test by the organising committee on Friday evening, following a positive test on Friday morning.

The cyclist is now staying in a quarantine hotel, where he must “remain in quarantine for at least another 10 days,” German Chef de Mission Dirk Schimmelpfennig told a press conference on Saturday.

“Of course, it’s very bitter for him, especially since he complied with all the hygiene rules,” Schimmelpfennig said.

Luckily Geschke’s three other team members tested negative and are able to take part in the race.

“The other team members were all tested yesterday. They were all negative in the PCR test. His room-mate, Emanuel Buchmann, was tested again this morning at 5am. Again with a negative test result, so that he could start in the road race today at 11am,” Schimmelpfennig added.

All athletes are subject to daily routine screenings in a bid to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

That’s why we stick to them, because apart from this one case, it has worked very well.”

It was noticed here in the team, but it encourages us all to be vigilant and consciously focus on our rules until the last day.”
