Music lovers came out in droves to attend Strawberry Music Festival, held at the Music Festival Plaza in Guangzhou’s Changlong Resort, Guangdong, on Saturday. The festival was held under strict COVID-19 regulations as authorities continue to commit to a ‘zero-COVID’ strategy, aiming for as few COVID-19 cases as possible.

Hundreds of attendees were subject to strict COVID-19 controls when entering the festival grounds, with signs stating that guests must provide a negative test no older than 48 hours and a ‘green code’ COVID-19 pass.

Attendee Guoguo stated that she had passed ‘three or four’ checks to see her COVID documents, and stated that the security is ‘very strict.’

“Many people may choose to go to music festivals in Southeast Asia, Europe, the United States, etc, if they are able to go abroad,” said attendee Mr Yang, adding that overseas travel restrictions might have contributed to the large turnout.

China has maintained strict limitations on international travel throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, aiming for ‘zero COVID’ cases in the country.

According to the World Health Organisation, China reported 119 new COVID-19 infections on Friday.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Guoguo, Attendee (Chinese): “Epidemic prevention is still quite strict, from the entrance to festival line I passed three or four lines checks to see my nucleic acid test and health green card, it’s very strict.”

SOT, Guoguo, Attendee (Chinese): “There are still a lot of people, but due to the epidemic all of us need a negative nucleic acid test that is no older than 48 hours. Some people may not have time to do it, and some people from other provinces can’t come due to local COVID restrictions, so maybe the turnout has been affected by that.”

SOT, Mr Yang, Attendee (Chinese): “We did a nucleic acid test specifically for this music festival, and everyone who comes here needs to do it.”

SOT, Mr Yang, Attendee (Chinese): “Many people may choose to go to music festivals in Southeast Asia, Europe, the United States, etc, if they are able to go abroad. So not being able to go abroad might have led more people to come here.”
