Beijing residents joined long lines for COVID-19 tests on Tuesday, as China steps up efforts to contain the Delta variant, which has lead to the biggest outbreak the country has seen in months.

A total of six residential communities in Beijing’s Haidian District have implemented lockdown measures, after one locally transmitted coronavirus case was reported in the area on Monday.

According to China’s National Health Commission, the country reported 90 new confirmed cases on Monday, along with 98 on Sunday.

Of the newly confirmed cases, 61 were locally transmitted, the health authority said.

45 patients with symptoms were reported in Jiangsu, with five in Nanjing and 40 in Yangzhou city, according to the provincial government.

Beijing authorities have also suspended travel links from regions where cases were reported in a bid to protect the capital.
