China: Mass testing underway in Shandong's Yantai after Delta variant cases found

People formed long queues outside COVID-19 testing stations across Yantai, in eastern China’s Shandong, on Tuesday, after two domestic Delta variant infections were confirmed in the area.

After the announcement, authorities have set up city-wide testing points and have started conducting mass testing to trace and contain infections.

Yantai’s streets remained clear of traffic, with only a few vehicles seen driving by.

According to local media, the people who were found to have the Delta variant were two beauty salon employees.

China is dealing with its largest coronavirus outbreak in months, with at least 90 new cases confirmed on Monday, with 98 on Sunday, according to the country’s National Health Commission. The government has responded with local lockdowns and mass testing in affected cities, while also suspending transport links in a bid to hinder transmission.
