China: Preparations for 2022 Winter Olympics Biathlon underway in Zhangjiakou

A four-day international Biathlon training week, the final test event for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games, starts at the National Biathlon Center in Zhangjiakou on Tuesday.

Due to the pandemic, technicians and experts tested the trail.

We have prepared for the Winter Olympic Games for years but the games will be only 10-20 days. It is vital to use the competition venue after the Olympics,” explained the Alpine Operation Manager at the centre, Wei Qinghua, as he outlined the dual purpose of the competition venue.

“We will use the venue for the World Cup and World Championship. Secondly, we will open the venue to the public and make it more inclusive,” continued Wei Qinghua.

210 athletes from 40 teams will take in the Winter Olympics, which are set to take place February 4 to 20.

In the beginning, the the working intensity is not high and speeded it up for a bit. At the most, we put 26 snowmakers in snowmaking simultaneously, which ensure the efficiency of snowmaking.”

SOT, Chen Guohui, Venue and Infrastructure Manager of Guyangshu Operation Team (Mandarin): “In the recent two years, I found more people come to Chongli during summer time than winter time. Skiing amateurs always go to Chongli during winter time while people like to travel with family to Chongli during summer time. These visitors who come during summer time probably can not go to the general trail, with an angle usually around 20 - 30 degrees. But the the trail for Biathlon is usually less than 10, which is suitable for the beginners. The sustainable use after Olympics for the Biathlon venue targets skiing beginners.”
