Clashes broke out between Israeli settlers and Palestinians in Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood after Itamar Bin Gvir, a far-right MK, set up an office in the neighbourhood on Sunday.

Bin Gvir was seen arriving at the neighbourhood along with several Israeli settlers and body guards, before Israelis and Palestinians began hurling chairs at each other.

“I see there is no police presence, nine times a carl (of an Israeli settler) was set on fire. The law is not enforced here, so my duty is not to sit in the parliament and eat, but to come here, to guard and make sure the police will do its job. This is why I set my office here, I will work both from here and from the parliament,” said Bin Gvir.

Bin Gvir, a member of the far-right Otzma Yehudit party, announced on Saturday his plans to set up an office – practically a table under a sunshade, in Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood, after a Jewish house was reportedly attacked by a Molotov cocktail.

In May 2021, Bin Gvir attempted to move his office into the neighbourhood following clashes between Palestinians and Israeli settlers. However, the Palestinian residents and supports prevented the move, and so did the Benjamin Netanyahu’s government back then in fear of “further escalation.”

Around 300 Palestinians in Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood are facing eviction after Israeli courts denied them the right to stay at their houses which they have been living in for decades.

Israeli settlement groups believe the houses were built on lands originally owned by Jews before 1948, which Palestinians deny.

SOT, Ben Gvir, Knesset Member (Hebrew): “Here there was an attempt to set on fire a family with a baby. I saw the baby’s bed, it was horrific. If there were at home at that time, they would’ve died.”

SOT, Ben Gvir, Knesset Member (Hebrew): “I see there is no police presence, cars were set on fire nine times. The law is not enforced here, so my duty is not to sit in the parliament and eat, but to come here, to guard and make sure the police will do their job. This is why I set my office here, I will work both from here and from the parliament.”

SOT, Ben Gvir, Knesset Member (Hebrew): “I will be here until the house of Tal (an Israeli settler) will be secured, and it can’t be that people here will be abandoned, 200 meters from the police headquarters, Jews are abandoned, yesterday a house was set on fire, we don’t see the police here, this is not acceptable.”

SOT, Ibrahim Salem, Sheikh Jarrah resident (Arabic): “The [Israeli] settlers came here yesterday and assaulted us, there were more than 300 hundred settlers. They stayed at a settler’s house next to ours, they assaulted us, destroyed the cars and sprayed gas at my mother. Ben Gvir came here and claimed he would set up an office and called upon all settlers to come in. The settlers also assaulted us today. My brother Khalil was arrested because he defended our mother who was wounded in her hand after the settlers assaulted her with gas.”

SOT, Mohammed Abu Humus, Palestinian activist (Arabic): “The policy adopted by the occupation and the Knesset was to mobilise settlers, as Ben Gvir set up a parliamentary office here in order to assault Palestinians with the protection of police. We call on the international community to protect the [Palestinian] families in Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in order to prevent settlers from assaulting them under the protection of Israeli police. Ben Gvir, on the other hand, is politically manipulating the situation with support from the far-right.”
