Coca growers released 180 soldiers on Thursday that they had captured in Tibu, in the department of Norte de Santander. The soldiers had been sent by the Colombian government to carry out works regarding the eradication of coca plantations.

Footage published by the Ombudsman office shows the staff of the organisation displaced to the scene and the soldiers involved in the incident.

The soldiers belonged to the 30th Engineer Battalion of the Vulcan Task Force of the Army’s Second Division.

According to local media reports, the capture happened last Tuesday, after the refusal of the peasants to allow the military to eradicate the crops.

The coca growers demand their source of income to be respected and recall that their intention is to “gradually substitute” the crops.
