Speaking from Bogota, Colombia’s Defence Minister Diego Molano condemned the attacks on the Camilo Daza international airport in the city of Cucuta on Tuesday.

According to the Minister, the first explosion took place while an attacker attempted to jump the gates of the airport, which caused the explosives they were carrying to explode.

The second incident took place while police forces were searching the airport for threats after the first explosion, with officers Reyes and Barreno accidentally activating an explosive device which resulted in their death. Barreno referred to the incidents as a ‘terrorist act’.

“We regret their deaths, and we offer the greatest condolences to their families, we accompany them in their pain, but that also make us to continue the offensive against those criminal groups, such as the FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) and ELN (National Liberation Army) dissidents,” commented Molano in regards to the fallen officers while hinting at potential attribution.

Passengers were evacuated and flights were suspended on the day as a result of the attacks.

SOT, Diego Molano, Defence Minister of Colombia (Spanish): “We repudiate the terrorist act in Cucuta, at the Camilo Daza airport. Today, in two consecutive events, first an individual tried to jump the airport gate with an explosive device, it was activated, and this individual died. Also, immediately, the anti-explosive group of the police arrived with some soldiers, and in the search that they were doing of a nearby briefcase, a device was activated again and took the lives of the police officers Reyes and Barreno. We regret their deaths, and we offer the greatest condolences to their families, we accompany them in their pain, but that also make us to continue the offensive against those criminal groups, such as the FARC and ELN dissidents, who are on the border, where they always seek to carry out terrorist actions that they plan and finance from Venezuela and operate and develop in Colombia, seeking to affect the activity and tranquility of the Norte de Santander residents.”
