Contestants packed into Lenzo Land, a video game centre in Damascus, to play a violence-free version of the popular Netflix show ‘Squid Game,’ as seen on Friday.

“We are here as far from violence as possible,” said Muhannad, one of the game organisers.

Participants queued outside before entering and meeting with workers dressed as armed guards with red overalls once the games began.

They played versions of the games from the show, and players were knocked out round by round.

In the end, a winner was crowned, and he went home with a prize of one million Syrian pounds (280 dollars; 250 euros).

I liked the idea and presented it to the staff here, who are present with us in the costumes of the Squid Game series. There are certain conditions in the game and there are certain rules that we follow, in order to have one winner eventually. We used the title of the series to be able to give a certain feeling to the game, as the series went viral through the media recently.”

SOT, Muhannad, Game organiser: “Of course, we do not have violence and we try to simplify stages, moreover players lose without any violence with the use of a specific card, when the player loses this card, that means he is out. We are here as far from violence as possible, we want to simplify what we see in the media, so that we can enjoy them in our Syrian society.”
