Costa Rica: San Jose residents head to polls to vote in presidential election

Several people headed to polling stations to vote in Costa Rica’s presidential and parliamentary elections on Sunday, as seen in San Jose.
Queues formed outside the polls as more people arrived to cast their votes later on the day.
Some voters expressed a sense of uncertainty about the election outcome.
“I feel that there has not been a truly defined option and that it has been the same parties, which are always those who are in the lead,” said David Bolanos, a college student.
According to official predictions, the election will likely head into a second round given the lack of a clear favorite amid 25 candidates.
A potential second-round of elections would take place on April 3.

SOT, David Bolanos, College student (Spanish): “I feel that there has not been a truly defined option, and that it has been the same parties, which are always those who are in the lead. And that not much has been heard about the minority parties, although I also feel that the minorities are the same people who were already in other parties.”

SOT, David Bolanos, College student (Spanish): “I don’t know what to expect, who’s going to stay. I feel that everything is very divided.”

SOT Oscar Penaranda, Prosecutor for National Liberation Party (Spanish): “The movement that we have had here, in San Antonio, for the moment has been very cold. The reality of voting has been very cold, we hope that by the afternoon people will begin to arrive. As a general rule in this district always happens the same. People leave the Church, and in the afternoon is when we have the largest number of people.”

SOT, Oscar Penaranda, Prosecutor for National Liberation Party (Spanish): “I feel, according to the movement, from the people you know, that Jose Maria is going to win. Yes, logically, as the movement looks like, we are going to go to a second round. But Jose Maria is going to win.”

SOT, Bernardo Rodas, Militant from Frente Amplio (Spanish): “We expected the lines to be longer, but it’s been pretty snappy. I think that the Court has worked quite well with that, that it has followed the measures, so the movement has been quite fluid.”

SOT, Bernardo Rodas, Militant from Frente Amplio (Spanish): “My expectation is to win in the first round with the Broad Front. But in general that people go out to vote.”

SOT, Alexander Vargas, Militant from PASE (Spanish): “Sometimes with so much debate, and with so many things that are said in the campaign, it is good to have a beer to wash down those bitter drinks, which are sometimes heard from certain people on the ballot.”

SOT, Alexander Vargas, Militant from PASE (Spanish): “My expectation would be that people vote, first of all. Get the people out to vote. We know that going to a second round would cost the country 1,875,000 dollars. And we are not for that, we better go out and vote. My expectation is that the best wins, the one who is going to leave the country in the best hands.”
