90-year-old grandmother Margaret Keenan has become the first person in the world to receive the coronavirus vaccine outside of clinical trials, at the University Hospital in Coventry.

Today, December 8, has been dubbed ‘V-Day’ by the UK’s health secretary Matt Hancock, as the vaccination rollout begins across the country.

People aged 80 and over and care home workers are among the first to receive the jab.

The next challenge for the UK government is to overcome scepticism around the vaccine’s safety, with one professor reassuring the public that “no corners have been cut” in its development.

The UK became the first country in the world to give regulatory approval to the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine.
