Diaper-wearing special needs kitty is fearless and thinks he's limitless

Mickey was surrendered to the Chris Griffey Memorial Feline Foundation when a baby, as he was born different, with what turned out to be Manx syndrome. Manx syndrome is spina bifida in a cat. He can’t use his back legs. They’re a little deformed. He needs bladder expression and he leaks poop. So he wears a diaper. I first saw Mickey on Instagram,and instantly fall in love. I already have a special needs cat, and I knew I was ready to adopt another. I figured they would be a perfect match for each other. And they were.

Hi, beautiful. Mom meeting Mickey for the first time. Logistically, it was a little difficult. And as he was in the USA and I in Canada, but I applied to adopt him, was approved. And one of their volunteers worked for an airline. So flew him to Toronto to join my family.

The normal protocol when introducing new cats is to separate them, but this was almost impossible for Mickey. He basically threw himself at my other cats and dog and said, “You’re going to love me now.” And they did. He fit right in, instantly falling in love with my other special cat and my dog. That’s attached, Mickey. He’s like my little devil child. Every family has one. He tears through the house, attacks my feet daily and cuddles up to the others, whether they want it or not.

He doesn’t know he’s any different than any other cat. Climbing, playing, going up and down stairs. He does what he wants when he wants and his disabilities don’t stop him. What’s going on here? He’s a master at getting his diaper off and he’s a little Houdini. So I put pajamas and clothes on them to help keep them on. He’s an inspiration to me. He shows that you can never give up. He recently broke his leg. His bones aren’t as strong as a normal cat, but he came through surgery like a champ. And he’s pretty much back to his regular self.

His wide eyes and devilishly antics get him anything he wants. And it’s impossible to get mad at him for anything. He just looks at me with those big, bright eyes. Special needs pets are amazing animals. The love they show is incomparable to anything in the world. He may be disabled, but he’s fully handicapable, and the love of my life. He has no fear and no limits. I couldn’t imagine life without him. Mickey is living his best life. Sure, it takes a little extra care like expressing his bladder and changing his diaper,
but it takes no more than a few extra minutes a day. It’s so worth owning a special pet, witnessing their milestones and determination. It’s a feeling like none other.
