East Jerusalem: EU envoy visits family facing eviction in Sheikh Jarrah

A group of European Union delegates, including the EU envoy to the West Bank and Gaza visited the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood in East Jerusalem, on Monday.
Head of the mission Sven Kuhn von Burgsdorff called on Israel to call off the eviction of Palestinian families as he visited the house of one of the families threatened to lose their homes.
“For us for the European Union and partner and they are many here today, these settlements are illegal in international law and this is occupied territory in east Jerusalem. These people have full right to live here,” von Burgsdorff said, adding that the EU is committed “to building the foundations of a Palestine state.”
The Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood has become a strong point of contention as Israeli and Palestinian locals have contested the ownership of properties in the East Jerusalem neighbourhood.

We’re standing in front of the Salem family house, an old house, housing 11 people, three generations, four children and they are being threatened by eviction in the next few days and as I said that is taking place before eyes in the middle of the Christmas, in the middle of the festive season. For me as a Christian, this is difficult to bear.”

And I say this in the middle of the festive, of the Christmas season. We are here, European Union and partners, not only demonstrate our commitment to building the foundations of a Palestine state where all parties can agree on the final status of Jerusalem, where the Palestinians can call this also their capital, that is part of their future capital.”

We can not simply do this by evicting people, Palestinians who live here. So both for my political and for my legal point of view but also for my humanitarian point of view I am appalled by what I am seeing here.”

SOT, Fatima Salem, Local threatened with displacement (Arabic): “I appeal to them to help us and to be by our side, to prevent this Israeli decision, for not leaving us on the street, this is what I only want, I will not ask for anything else, no financial dues or anything, I want to stay in my house, the Israeli government is unjust, on Friday the police was beating me and hitting my daughters.”
