Images from Riobamba on Tuesday show cars driving along a road amid a darkening sky after the Sangay volcano began spewing tons of ash.

Ecuadorian authorities have confirmed that the ash cloud is seven kilometres high above the volcano’s crater. The ash fall has affected areas in the provinces of Bolivar, Chimborazo, Los Rios and Guayas.

Sangay volcano is the most active volcano in Ecuador. In November 2020, the Geophysical Institute of the National Polytechnic School reported an increase in emissions and did not rule out that it is part of the beginning of a new eruptive cycle.
