Ecuador: Locals in Guayaquil react to Olympic sprinter murder

Locals in Guayaquil, Ecuador’s second largest city, reacted on Saturday to the news that Olympic sprinter Alex Quinonez had been fatally shot late last Friday in yet unclear circumstances.
“The departure of a human being is hard, but in Alex’s case it is a great sadness for Ecuadorian sport,” said resident Andrea Sotomayor.
“Unfortunately, Alex was one of these people, he was in the wrong place at the wrong time,” resident David Reiban commented.
Quinonez was shot and killed in the northwestern sector of Guayaquil.
The 200 metres specialist participated in the final of the 2012 Olympics in London and won a bronze medal at the 2019 World Championships in Doha.
Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso paid tribute to him, promising to find and punish the culprits.
