Ecuador: Police intervene in Guayaquil jail after 118 inmates die in prison riot

A special police unit could be seen entering a detention centre in Guayaquil, Saturday, after 118 inmates were killed and 79 others injured this week in the country’s worst prison riot.

Ecuador has sent 3,600 police and military personnel to prisons across the country to maintain order, the Ministry of Interior said. Officials alleged gangs are fighting for drug trafficking routes in the overcrowded detention centres.

The government has also announced that will pardon about 2,000 inmates to ease overcrowding after the deadly riot.
