Hundreds of protesters marched to oppose the leadership of President Nayib Bukele and to commemorate the signing of the peace accords that ended the civil war in San Salvador on Sunday.
Protesters marched with anti-government signs and banners and chanted slogans opposing Bukele. One protester also burned an effigy depicting the Salvadoran leader.
​​“We currently have a democracy that has been violated and we have had setbacks in the last two years, that is why we are marching,” explained protester Karla Guevara.
Sunday marks 30 years since the end of El Salvador’s civil war which claimed the lives of over 75,000. The peace accords were signed on January 16 in 1992 and brought the bloody civil war to a close.
Bukele is the first postwar leader to not publicly commemorate the signing of the accords, which he instead labelled a “farce.”

SOT, Maritza Alfaro, Protester (Spanish): “We no longer have freedom of expression, you as journalists and us as civil society are spying on us and they are spying on us with our tax money.”

SOT, Efraín Camacho, Protester (Spanish):“We are fed up with this government, this government is incompetent, with this government we are going like a ship adrift, definitely.”
