Moscow expects the West to respond “in a tight schedule” to Moscow’s proposal to solve the emerging security problems with Ukraine, according Russia’s Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OCSE) envoy.

“We see a compromise in such a rather rigid and straightforward shape but such a situation’s bringing us to the point that we won’t drive the round dance and we’re waiting our partners’ reaction in tight schedule. It’s not a drawn out over months, over years process,” Permanent Representative of Russian Federation to OSCE Alexander Lukashevich said during a press conference on Thursday in Vienna.

Lukashevich called NATO expansion in Europe “the main blow” to its security system, and added “that’s why it has to be legally resisted.”

“All these Russian ideas that we’ve been discussing in Geneva, in Brussels and here in Vienna, on the OSCE platform, are essentially a moment of truth, which should determine whether we will agree on lines that cannot be crossed, on principles that cannot be violated, or whether the situation will follow a very… A scenario that could lead to disastrous consequences process,” he said, amid reports that options were being prepared in Europe by military experts in case the situation cannot be defused.

Lukashevich added that such consequences need to be avoided.

The first closed meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council took place under the Polish Chairmanship earlier in the afternoon in Vienna.

In mid-December, the Russian Foreign Ministry published drafts of a treaty with the US and an agreement with NATO on guarantees and security, which were subsequently handed over to Washington and its allies. In one of the clauses, Moscow suggests that the alliance countries should provide guarantees ruling out further advances eastwards, in particular into Ukrainian territory.
