France: Activists occupy Olympic construction site outside Paris

Activists occupied a construction site earmarked for a 2024 Olympics swimming pool complex in Aubervilliers, just outside of Paris on Wednesday.

During the protest, some demonstrators chained themselves to a cement mixer and displayed banners condemning the project.

“The allotment gardens which were here and which we’ve occupied last summer were gorgeous and they will now be turned into a so-called Olympic swimming pool. We absolutely had to act because once the concrete has begun flowing it’s a done deal,” one protester explained.

Police officers could be seen dragging the protesters on the ground and arresting some of them over the occupation of the site.

A total of 14 protesters were subsequently held in police custody following the gathering.

SOT, Activist (French): “We’re here because the cement mixer was taken here to the former allotment gardens of Aubervilliers. Concrete will soon flow, it’s irreversible. The allotment gardens which were here and which we’ve occupied last summer were gorgeous and they will now be turned into a so-called Olympic swimming pool. We absolutely had to act because once the concrete has begun flowing it’s a done deal.”

SOT, Activist (French): “The problem with this swimming pool is the overall issue of metropolisation in Ile-de-France. The issue of confiscating spaces that are both common goods for people and green spaces important for (environmental) balance. Here in Aubervilliers, we are in one of the areas with the least number of green spaces per square metres and per inhabitant. In Ile-de-France and elsewhere, these spaces are grabbed and used for lucrative projects that are either private or not. Either way, this leads to people having to live in concrete with paid access rights. They will be stripped from their common good and their quality of life which will be used to benefit big corporations.”
