Police arrested a suspect in Bollene, southwestern France, on Wednesday night, ending an hours-long manhunt after a man was found beheaded at his home earlier that evening. Neighbours say the suspect had recently left a psychiatric hospital.

The victim was found beheaded and disemboweled on Wednesday afternoon, prompting a large-scale manhunt in the small town of 13,000 inhabitants. The suspect, a 37-year-old man reported to be the victim’s grandson, was arrested at around 23.30 local time (21.30 GMT) police say.

SOT, Local resident (French): “We heard a bit about a murder in the neighbourhood. And the person who was killed was someone from the area, he lives in our neighbourhood and walked past here every day, a really nice person who goes to buy his bread there. Everytime he passes by he says ‘hi’. We’re really sad to hear this person died.”

SOT, Local resident (French): “He’s someone who’s lived here for a long time. He’s young, he’s a bit… He has mental issues, he has psychiatric issues.”

SOT, Local resident (French): “Yes, he just left the psychiatric hospital.”

Journalist (French): “How long ago?”

Local resident (French): “Not too long ago.”

SOT, Local resident (French): “We’re really scared and all the police came, we’re really safe, they had helicopters, they had everything immediately. They got here first so… But tonight we’re scared because he hasn’t been found yet.”

The grizzly murder comes days after the one-year anniversary of the beheading of Samuel Paty, a middle-school teacher from the suburbs of Paris. Police, however, said Wednesday’s crime is thought to be family-related.

“No objective element at this point leads us to believe this crime is linked to a terrorist act,” said Pierre Gagnoud, a prosecutor from the nearby town of Carpentas.
