Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov discussed the migrant crisis at the Polish-Belarusian border with his French counterparts. The top Russian diplomat commented on the talks at a press conference following the meeting of the Russian-French Security Cooperation Council in Paris on Friday.

“We explained the situation, in which there should not be any double standards compared to the way migrants are treated in other EU countries and not at the border with Belarus. [Colleagues] only urged us to help convince Minsk to solve this problem. It does not depend on Minsk, or not only on Minsk. There must also be a constructive approach by the European Union,” Lavrov said.

SOT, Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister (Russian): “The French colleagues touched upon the migrant crisis at the borders of Belarus with Poland, Latvia, and Lithuania. We explained the situation, in which there should not be any double standards compared to the way migrants are treated in other EU countries and not at the border with Belarus. We have to act in the same way, fully respecting the principles, the fundamental principles of international humanitarian law. I do not think we have convinced our colleagues, but at least we have arguments they have not argued with. They only urged us to help convince Minsk to solve this problem. It does not depend on Minsk, or not only on Minsk. There must also be a constructive approach by the European Union.”

SOT, Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister (Russian): “Anyone who has even once read, even cursory, the text of the Minsk agreements, which were approved by a UN Security Council resolution. In accordance with this document, Kiev, Donetsk, and Luhansk have to agree on a number of key issues on which the resolution of this intra-Ukrainian crisis depends. And we have once again urged Paris together with Berlin not just to encourage, but to force the Ukrainian authorities to fulfil their international obligations.”

SOT, Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister (Russian): “We explained the situation with regular accusations against Russia that we are encouraging some kind of contacts between the Malian leadership and a Russian private military company. We showed the groundlessness of such allegations. We have stressed that through inter-state cooperation we are providing military and technical assistance to Mali and are helping to organise the work of the security service and the Malian army.”

SOT, Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister (Russian): “We talked about the Iranian nuclear programme. Here we do have prospects for more constructive engagement. On November 29 we are scheduled to resume negotiations on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action to resolve the situation around Iran’s nuclear program. And we will be advocating that the agreements that were concluded under this document in 2015, which were also approved by a Security Council resolution, are implemented, that their implementation is resumed in full. And, of course, this involves the United States returning to fulfilling its obligations, including lifting all sanctions that were imposed in the context of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.”

SOT, Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister (Russian): “I managed to have a hasty but rather lengthy conversation with Charles Michel, including the fact that we should still somehow normalise the situation between Moscow and Brussels, the European Union I mean.”

SOT, Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister (Russian): “Aeroflot… it was not even mentioned. Everyone understands that this is nonsense. It’s not difficult to compare the accusations with the information that is publicly available about how, where, and from where Aeroflot flies. For this, you have to at least try to get to the bottom of the situation.”

SOT, Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister (Russian): “Our relevant structure works together with the European Medicines Agency. And we work, of course, with the World Health Organisation. But a number of countries, as you know, in the European Union have decided, starting with Hungary, to accept our vaccine.”

SOT, Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister (Russian): “You are probably not in a position to ask the French leadership this question yourself, because you will not be accredited at the Elysee Palace, right? We drew their attention to the fact that this, and many other actions by Western, including French, colleagues directly contradict the commitments that were agreed in the early nineties at the initiative of the West within the OSCE.”
