France: Paris protesters decry President Saied's 'coup' in Tunisia

Around two hundred demonstrators gathered to protest against the repression of demonstrations in Tunisia and to denounce President Kais Saied in Paris on Sunday.

“We want to denounce the coup d’etat by which the President stole the revolution from us, blocking the democratic institutions that were the fruit of our revolution,” said one demonstration in Republic Square.

A series of photographs were displayed in the square seemingly showing moments of the harsh reaction of the security forces who intervened against the demonstrators in Tunis. A French Journalist of the newspaper Liberation was beaten up by the Tunisian police while covering the protests.

Last July, President Saied sacked the government and froze the parliament, in a move the Islamist opposition has called “a coup”.

The protest coincided with the 11th anniversary of the toppling of the former President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, the event that started the Arab Spring.

SOT, Demonstrator (French): “We are here in support of freedom and democracy. Some say that nothing has been done in the last ten years, but at least there was freedom of speech. Nowadays I am afraid to write even on Facebook and it is really serious.”

SOT, Demonstrator (French): “It seems to me that the situation is getting worse and worse in Tunisia, we need to do something to change Tunisia, we want a democracy, like here in France, where at least there is freedom of expression, it shows that we are here in the square today. And that it is not the same in Tunisia in 2022 is very bad.”

SOT, Demonstrator (French): “14 January 2022 is the 11th anniversary of the revolution and at the same time we want to denounce the coup d’etat by which the President stole the revolution from us, blocking the democratic institutions that were the fruit of our revolution.”
