Dozens of protesters marched to demand better treatment from the French government and to receive residency status so they can work legally, in Paris on Friday.
The protesters marched with banners and drums through central Paris demanding action.
The group that organised the protest, ‘Coordination 75 des Sans Papiers’, have been demonstrating for 20 years. In October 2020 the group organised a protest in Paris attended by 60,000 people.
“Our demands are simple and humanitarian, they are the regularization of all undocumented people, accommodation for all, freedom of movement and the closure of detension centres,” said Youssef, a delegate from the collective.
“We chose this word, anti-racism because it sums everything up. When we speak of racism, it’s not just racism against colours, or religions, or origins, it’s also repressive and contradictory laws the state imposes on foreigners in general.”
The group has been holding weekly protests on Fridays for 20 years.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Youssef, Delegate the Coordination of the Undocumented (French): “We’ve been in this struggle for 20 years, and we’ve been protesting every Friday for 20 years. Our demands are simple and humanitarian, they are the regularization of all undocumented people, accommodation for all, freedom of movement and the closure of detension centres.”

SOT, Youssef, Delegate the Coordination of the Undocumented (French): “We’ve organised a campaign against racism. The start of the campaign was December 18, the day before International Migrants Day, so we chose this word, anti-racism because it sums everything up. When we speak of racism, it’s not just racism against colours, or religions, or origins, it’s also repressive and contradictory laws the state imposes on foreigners in general.”

SOT, Youssef, Delegate the Coordination of the Undocumented (French): “This latest period, there hasn’t been any chance, nothing. At the contrary, there are laws being passed to intimidate foreigners even more, but we aren’t giving up, we’re continue to fight in the hope that one day it changes.”
