At least 15 supporters of former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili were detained on Monday outside a Tbilisi court where the ex-president’s trial is taking place.

Hundreds of protesters gathered outside the Tbilisi City Court, with some of them climbing on top of a security post waving Georgian, Ukrainian, and US flags and chanting “Misha!”

Police officers reportedly repeatedly asked the protesters to leave the roof, but the demonstrators ignored the call and a scuffle ensued.

Saakashvili was detained on October 1 upon his return to Georgia and given a prison sentence over a conviction in absentia for abuse of office. While in jail, Saakashvili has gone on hunger strike, describing himself as a political prisoner.

While in prison, Saakashvili went on a hunger strike, calling himself a political prisoner. Supporters of the ex-president collected signatures for a petition addressed to the president and the government of Georgia demanding the release of the former head of state.
