Hundreds of supporters of former Georgian president Mikhail Saakashvili rallied in his support in Tbilisi on Monday, requesting his transfer to civilian hospital.

The former leader was moved to a prison to hospital last week due to health concerns after a prolonged hunger strike, which the politician announced he had undertaken after being taken into custody.

Saakashvili was detained on 1 October. He had previously been placed on the domestic wanted list for covering up the murder of banker Sandro Girgvliani and the beating of MP Valery Gelashvili. He had been sentenced in absentia to three and six years’ imprisonment respectively.

On November 6 the Georgian Justice Ministry’s Special Penitentiary Service published footage on Facebook showing Saakashvili eating food surrounded by doctors.
