Thousands of supporters of former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili held a rally outside the parliament in Tbilisi to demand the politician’s release from jail, on Tuesday.

Footage shows protesters chanting slogans while holding placards and flags of various countries.

The date of the protest is dedicated to the former president’s birthday: he celebrates his 54th birthday on 21 December.

The rally was reportedly organised by the opposition United National Movement party.

Saakashvili was detained on October 1. He had previously been placed on the domestic wanted list in connection to abusing his powers in the murder case of banker Sandro Girgvliani and the beating of MP Valery Gelashvili, for which he was sentenced in absentia to three and six years’ imprisonment respectively.

Saakashvili is also accused of illegally crossing the state border and violently dispersing protesters.

While in jail, Saakashvili went on hunger strike, describing himself as a political prisoner.
