Former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili left the hall of the Tbilisi court on Monday after giving a speech, during the case of the brutal dispersal of protesters on November 7, 2007.

During the trial, the defendant explained the reasons for the dispersal of the rally for more than an hour, after which he was transferred to a military hospital in an ambulance.

After Saakashvili’s departure, a rally organised by his supporters continued on Agmashenebli alley.

According to the Georgian Interior Ministry, the protest action went beyond the norms stipulated by the law on peaceful assemblies. Police officers detained 15 people for disobeying law enforcement agencies. The former mayor of Tbilisi, Gigi Ugulava, was also detained.

Mikhail Saakashvili was arrested on October 1 upon his return to Georgia. The ex-president was put on the state wanted list for the murder of banker Sandro Girgvliani and the beating of deputy Valery Gelashvili, for which Saakashvili was sentenced in absentia to three and six years, respectively.

In prison, the ex-president went on a hunger strike, calling himself a political prisoner. Supporters of Mikheil Saakashvili organised a collection of signatures under a petition to the president and the government of Georgia demanding the release of the former leader of the state.
