Georgia: Rescue operation continues in Batumi as death toll of building collapse climbs to 8

A search and rescue operation was ongoing in Batumi on Saturday night and morning, a day after a residential building partially collapsed killing eight people.

Footage shows rescuers and construction equipment clearing the rubble and extracting victims from under the debris.

A section of the five-storey building, to which two more storeys had been illegally added, collapsed on Friday morning. According to media reports citing operational services, the number of people killed in the accident has increased to eight. One person was still under the rubble.

A criminal case has been opened over the accident under clause 2 of Article 240 of the Criminal Code of Georgia (“Violation of safety rules when carrying out mining, construction or other work, causing human death or other serious consequences”).
