Rescuers continued to dismantle rubble and rescue people trapped under it in Batumi following the partial collapse of a five-storey residential building on Friday morning.

According to local media, rescuers managed to take out three injured people from under the wreckage.

According to Georgian Interior Minister Vakhtang Gomelauri, 10-15 more people could still be under the rubble, and two are in touch with rescuers.

The leading theory explaining why the building collapsed is linked to construction work that was being carried out on the ground floor.

“There were several versions: the gas version was considered, although, according to our information, construction work was carried out below, which was carried out by the owner, and maybe this was the reason,” said Gomelauri.

A search and rescue team is currently working at the scene while police and ambulance crews are on duty.

“An investigation is underway, and if this or that information is confirmed, of course, the perpetrators will be held responsible,” added Gomelauri.

The death toll has reached six people so far but is likely to increase.
