Germany: "A cruel crime" - Berlin condemns shooting at Perm university in Russia

The German government condemned the shooting which took place at a university in the Russian city of Perm earlier in the day during a press conference held in Berlin on Monday.

“It’s a cruel crime with at least eight victims and many more are reportedly injured. Our thoughts and sympathies are with the families of the murdered, and of course with those who are now in the hospitals grappling with the consequence. Let me express my wishes for a speedy recovery,” Seibert said at the presser.

Concerns over alleged ‘irregularities’ in the Russian legislative elections were also expressed.

“There are very serious indications by the Russian opposition politicians and by vote observers that there were massive irregularities during the course of the elections and during the counting,” Seibert stated.

Russia’s electoral commission has dismissed claims of widespread voting fraud and irregularities.

Russian voters went to the polls between September 17-19 to choose members of the State Duma, the lower house of parliament, as well as members of 39 regional parliaments and nine regional leaders.

It’s a cruel crime with at least eight victims and many more are reportedly injured. SOT, Maria Adebahr, Foreign Ministry spokesperson (German): “There are no final results of this election yet but we regret, and the reports from the last weekend prove that again, that the independent international voting observation was not possible because of the restrictions implemented by Russia. From our point of view and taking into account the new electronic voting experience and the three-day election this would have been very helpful for transparency and a more in-depth assessment of the electoral process. But so far, as of this morning, while the count is still ongoing, we are taking into account the reports of independent observers in the Russian Federation about serious violations of the elections. This is concerning to us and that is why we will follow very closely the announced efforts of the Russian authorities to investigate the reported incidents or to follow up on them very vigorously.”

A completely different thing that concerns us (also), as we have previously stated, is the rising pressure on opposition and civil society which led to the damage of social diversity and democracy during the campaign for the Duma elections.”

SOT, Maria Adebahr, Foreign Ministry spokesperson (German): “During the last weekend we were able to reach 258 families in cooperation with different organisations, together with family members that accounts for more than 1,000 people, we can’t give an exact number at this point. Via airplanes, there were three flights, and the fourth should be flying now, until now. In the first three flights we have evacuated more than 100 German citizens, 106 German citizens, and one more is on the way. By land, the manner is not to be discussed here, but by land we have brought 50 local workers and families to Pakistan on organised transport in cooperation with other organisations.”

SOT, Sebastian Gulde, Health Ministry spokesperson (German): “As you have already correctly said, the Minister has made a statement about it to Bild, In the future, those who were already infected with COVID-19, according to the recommendation of the STIKO, only will need one vaccine dose. To prove that one shot is necessary, in the future, one will need (to show) proof of antibodies in the blood. Regarding the status of the recovered person, as was the case before, an antibody test can indeed prove that you were already infected with the coronavirus but not when. Therefore the PCR test is still used as proof for the recovered status.”
