Germany: 'All options are on the table'- German spox on Ukraine tensions

The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee Michael Roth commented that “all options are on the table” in regards to Russia amidst escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine. The comments came in an online press conference in Berlin on Thursday.

“I have reason to hope that we have a realistic chance of finding a peaceful solution to this renewed Russian escalation toward Ukraine,” stated Roth.

Germany has not yet joined other nations such as the United Kingdom in providing NATO with extra military support, however, has repeatedly pointed to shutting down the gas pipeline Nord Stream 2, which runs from Russia to Germany, as a means of applying pressure should Russia decide to invade Ukraine.

“We are not ruling anything out, and that is precisely the position of the German government,” Roth went on to say.

The conference comes amid a build-up of Russian armed forces at the border with Ukraine. Moscow has said their actions are in response to security concerns and have demanded a ban on Ukraine entering NATO and a halt of NATO operations in several countries on Russia’s border.
