German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock declared Ukraine’s sovereignty and integrity of borders as ‘non-negotiable,’ speaking in her first government statement at the Bundestag in Berlin on Wednesday.
“The sovereignty of Ukraine and the immovability of the borders in Europe are not negotiable for us,” she said at the German Bundestag.
“A new military aggression against Ukraine carries a high price tag for Russia,” she added.
At the same time, she stressed that the only solution in regards to the tightening tensions between the two countries was diplomacy.
The left-wing politician Gregor Gysi criticised Baerbock’s statements for not mentioning Ukraine’s violations of the Russian-Ukrainian Minsk 2 armistice agreement.
SOT, Annalena Baerbock, Foreign Minister (German): “Ukraine’s sovereignty and the immovability of its borders in Europe are non-negotiable for us. A new military aggression against Ukraine carries a high price tag for Russia. And at the same time, despite this incredibly worrying Russian behaviour, there is only one solution and that is diplomacy to relieve the current tensions.”
SOT, Annalena Baerbock, Foreign Minister (German): “There is no decision about security in Europe without Europe.”
SOT, Annalena Baerbock, Foreign Minister (German): “The current situation reflects the world in which European foreign policy has to prove itself again. A world with growing geopolitical tensions, in which fortunately there are no more block confrontations, but competition between authoritarian forces and liberal democracies.”
SOT, Nils Schmid, SPD member of parliament (German): “Aggression by Russia will result in sanctions, all options are on the table, various sanctions, personal, sectoral sanctions, which can also affect the energy sector. Everything is coordinated with the Europeans and our partners in the USA. And it is precisely in this sense that we can also push back the Russian aggression through unity, and hopefully, because that must be the goal, finally implement the Minsk armistice agreement. That is our line and we will pursue it with great unity.”
SOT, Dr Gregor Gysi, Die Linke member of parliament (German): “We are also bothered by the deployment of soldiers, the massive deployment of soldiers on the border with Ukraine.”
SOT, Dr Gregor Gysi, Die Linke member of parliament (German): “As for Ukraine, Russia violates Minsk 2, but so does Ukraine. Why do you always mention one thing and never the other?”
SOT, Petr Bystron, AfD member of Parliament (German): “You allegedly have concerns about the observance of human rights. It was less than two days ago when you said that in Kazakhstan the internet and social media were being restricted. Here in Germany, free media are censored, the work of free journalists is hindered, channels, free media are switched off and media of the opposition are even deleted. Foreign TV stations are not given a broadcast license and the latest message: telegram is to be shut down just because the opposition is meeting there. No word on that, human rights do not play a role. But if the internet is switched off for two hours in Kazakhstan, oh, then human rights are at risk, yes? Who should buy into that?”
