Marcus Grotian, a German army officer running a network of volunteers in Afghanistan, accused the federal government of wilful failure to rescue former employees from the country on Tuesday during a Berlin press conference.
“I think it’s a fiasco and a disaster on an unimaginable scale that they did it this way, that they gave human lives into the hands of Taliban, and now they have to hope and look that they get as many as possible out of there,” said Grotian.
Grotian added that it is “absolutely clear” that the world can expect “many, too many human tragedies to come” from future events in Afghanistan.

SOT, Marcus Grotian, German army officer running network of volunteers in Afghanistan (German): “We are overwhelmed with disbelief because government parties and politicians have disregarded the warnings, ignored the evidence and possible solutions, shifted responsibility and to this day praise their own procedures and actions. Everyone did everything right, only the others did something wrong.”

SOT, Marcus Grotian, German army officer running network of volunteers in Afghanistan (German): “Fundamental problems have already arisen that have now led to the fact that we are trying here to funnel people through a needle’s eye. And there will be many, too many human tragedies to come. That’s absolutely clear.”
SOT, Marcus Grotian, German army officer running network of volunteers in Afghanistan (German): “Everyone who has worked for Germans must be let through there now. Because there won’t be many more chances. They’ve been turned away three times now, sometimes a fourth, a fifth time there might not be. And then maybe no more planes will fly.”
