LIVE: Protest in Berlin for safe evacuation of Afghan people to Germany

Demonstrators are set to gather outside the German Chancellery building in Berlin on Sunday, August 22 to demand the safe evacuation of people from Afghanistan.

The protesters are calling for the German government to put all possible efforts into keeping the airlift up to evacuate as many people as possible, along with ensuring a safe passage to Kabul’s Hamid Karzai International airport, and granting a refugee status to evacuees.

Many countries have been evacuating diplomatic personnel and translators after the Taliban’s recent seizure of power in Afghanistan.

Chaotic scenes were reported outside the airport in recent days, with massive queues of people trying to catch a flight and flee the country.

On Friday, the German Federal Foreign Office said it had evacuated some 1,600 people out of Kabul since Monday, August 16.​
