Germany: CDU candidate Laschet warns of potential red-red-green coalition

The Chancellor candidate of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party Armin Laschet warned his colleagues of a possible red-red-green coalition between the Social Democratic Party (SPD), the Green party, and the Left party, speaking from a meeting in Potsdam, the home constituency of his primary opponents, the Green’s Annalena Baerbock and the SPD’s Olaf Scholz, on Saturday.
“If they get the majority here in Germany, the country will become unsafer. And we want to avoid that,” said Laschet regarding Baerbock and Scholz.
Laschet also condemned the red-red-green coalition parties for blocking the Afghanistan mission’s financing.
“If this party wants to dissolve NATO and has not voted in any step of European unification, and wants to dissolve the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, then these are all reasons why these people should never be part of the German government.”
Laschet emphasised how he does not believe that the SPD or the Greens could efficiently achieve climate goals.
In the most recent polls for the federal election on 26 September, SPD’s Chancellor candidate Olaf Scholz leads ahead of his CDU rival Armin Laschet.

And that’s the main point.”

We know that we can’t do it without the USA, but securing an airport like Kabul airport, that’s something the European Union should trust itself with. And that’s why we need more Europe, and moreover, we need financial resources. SPD and the Greens say, ‘we don’t want to keep the NATO commitment to raise 2 percent’. But when an A400M flies to Kabul to pick up our citizens, when helicopters fly, then you have to procure them first. But SPD says no to every topic regarding the protection of our soldiers, even as part of the Federal Government. For months, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer has prepared a drone that can protect our soldiers against attacks. Olaf Scholz has so far refused to make a decision with the federal government under pressure from the left in his own party. And this shows that if they will get the majority here in Germany, the country will become unsafer. And we want to avoid that.”

SOT, Armin Laschet, CDU chancellor candidate (German): “If we want to be climate-neutral by 2045, we will have to rebuild our whole economy. The question is not if it’s 2038 or 2030, or 130 speed limit, yes or no, solar battery obligation, yes or no, that can be discussed. But the key question is if we manage to rearrange the steel industry, chemical industry, automobile industry in such a way that in 20 years we still have all these jobs, but climate-neutral. That’s the key task.”

SOT, Armin Laschet, CDU chancellor candidate (German): “If we plan the same way as before, we will neither be economically strong nor will we reach the climate protection goals. And that’s why, if we win the elections, and I’ll become Federal Chancellor, the first thing I will do is a 100-day speed package where we will speed up planning and decision making. Things cannot go on as they are.”
